Vanni has been famous to the agriculture, as like this area famous to the oral literature. To this status Guarding song &Sindhu are the best proof.
One of the great professor Mr.K.Kailasapathy mention as follows about Vanni’s oral literature, in fact, the oral literature will famous in between the place where the peoples do agriculture in proper manner. As like the world rule, in vanni also the oral literature has been amazing.
Mr.Mullaimani.V.Subramaniyam has mentioned a status in his book “Folk Research” as follows, the in 1927 November. The Mullaitivu farmers sing some of the songs, which are in “KathiramalaiPazhzhu” when they harvesting the paddy. In Mullaitivu’s folk songs, religious songs, work songs, storytelling songs take great part. In work songs, Kathiraiyapparpazhzhu, Pandipazhzhu and Kuruvipazhzhu are included as important one.
We can easily see the main theme of this song in “Pandipazhzhu and Kuruvipazhzhu”. Earlier it had been as oral literature. But now it has risen as written form by well-educated poets.
The person, who has better knowledge in these songs, can easily identify the differences between “Pandipazhzhu and Kuruvipazhzhu”.Prof.K.Kailasapathy has said, “All this kinds of songs describes the each thing of agriculture life”.
All songs has mentioned in here was written by Mr.VelupillaiKanapathipillai on April in 1959, who belonged to Puthukudiyiruppu area. But it was not published. At the field research in Vanni area, particularly in Kilinochchi&Mullaitivu, these songs were taken from his family members. In the written copy, the researchers could be get the very precious oral literature which contains big 2 types as “Pazhzhu&Sindhu”. This written copy is published after they were reexamined by VelupillaiGanapathipillai.
Kathiraimalai Pazhzhu (கதிரைமலைப்பள்ளு)
This song is sung on the god Murugan, who is in “Katragama” hill. This Murugan is the one & only god prayed by all community in Sri Lanka & India without differences. So, this song is also called as UzhathiyarPaaddu (உழத்தியர்பாட்டு).
And also these songs are sung to encourage & relief the stress of farmers, who works in paddy fields. In Vanni area, when they do harvesting these songs are sung with lot of music instruments. And also in this song, they mention the goodness of “Mahavali” River.
This song mostly describes the farmer’s life, farmer’s work & the problem between 2 wives of farmer. If we deeply focus the song, we can be notified the following situation.
Here, the farmer is mentioned as master (பள்ளன்). He has 2 wives. The 1st wife is called as “Mooththa Pazhzhi (மூத்த பள்ளி)” & 2nd wife is called as “Izhaya Pazhzhi (இளைய பள்ளி)”. The 1st wife belongs to his religion & place. But the 2nd wife belongs to different religion & place.
The master lives in 2nd wife’s house. He has love in her. He didn’t come to 1st wife’s house & working place even the paddy field floats in rainy period. So, she complains it to village head. The village head inquiries to the 2nd wife. But she hides the truth & tells lie. The head blames her husband. At that time their husband comes in front of the head.
After that, the husband does his works properly & gives the information about Accounts. And he starts his ploughing works. In this period he has been injured by bull. So, his wives cry a lot & return him from death.
After some days, he again comes back to his works & finally he gets higher income in farming. When he divides the share to his wives, he gives fewer portions to the 1st wife. So, she blames him in front of the people.
So, the fight starts again between 2 wives. Then after, they become compromise. Finally, they greet the master that is theirs husband.

PandiPazhzhu & KuruviPazhzhu (பண்டிப் பள்ளும் குருவிப் பள்ளும்)
In these songs, birds & pigs take important part. It describes the troubles & injuries of farmers by the wild animals & birds. Although the people know the wild animals are enemies of the farmers & they destroy the plant, they sing in the side of animals. They mention some thoughts, that they can realize easily and also describes people & their works in their songs. This category “Pazhzhu” contains plenty of truth & pleasure.
At the time highly popular of “Chena cultivation” Pandi Pazhzhu has arose. It tells about the chena cultivation via Pandi Pazhzhu. Mostly farmers select a one place and they plant plants rotationally in that area. This plantation is called as “Rotation cultivation”. The chena cultivation is totally different from this. In here, they plant same plant in different areas by clean the forest. Once they use a land by cleaning a forest, next time they clean another forest to plant. In Pandi Pazhzhu, “வனத்தை அறுத்து நெருப்பக் கொழுத்தி” song describes clearly about “Chena cultivation”.
