Thaalaaddu is a song, which is sung by the mom, grand mom, aunty & other relatives to make the child as sleep & stop the child’s cry. And also some times it gives the reason of the mom’s cry. It is one of the types of folk songs, which is joined with villager’s life & feelings. These songs were earlier kept as oral literature. But it is now kept as books by the folk songs researchers. The songs contain a sweet music. The child goes asleep by this sweet music.
The literature specialist says the meaning of “THAALAADDU (தாலாட்டுப் பாடல்கள்)” as follows, if we divide the name in two words as THAAL (தால்;) – AADDU (ஆட்டு), THAAL means Tongue and AADDU means swing. So all together THAALAADDU means, the song is sung by swing the tongue. And also it can be called as “AARAADDUTHAL” because of the sound, which is made at the time of they sing Lullaby as “Aararo Aariraro” (ஆராரோ ஆரிரரோ). And also, this sound is continued at the middle & end. Usually, the mom sing lullaby while she swing the child in her shoulder, hand, etc.
This song can be called as, Raaraaddu (ராராட்டு), Roraaddu (ரோராட்டு) in Tamil. Even the singer know a lengthy song & has an ability to lengthen the song, the length of the song depends on the time, child start to sleep. 02. MARUTHUVICHI VAAZHTHU – மருத்துவிச்சி வாழ்த்து (Wishes From A Lady Doctor)
A baby, when it arrive this world from the mother’s uterine, before the mom’s lullaby the lady doctor sing a song. This song is also considered as a type of lullaby. It is called as “Maruthuvichi Vaazhthu” (wishes from a lady doctor) in Tamil.
In this song, she wishes the child as it have to grow with good health in the world. Also she accompanies some good thoughts in that song, which are in her mind.

04. MALADIYIN THAALAADDU - மலடியின் தாலாட்டு
A lady who haven’t the god’s love, got married with lot of expectations. But she didn’t get a child even after 2 years. At that situation there are lot of peoples blame & criticize her that she haven’t a child.
So that lady worries by those words. And also she makes lot of prayers to the gods that please give me a baby.
For a several years she fights with gods and finally gets a child look like a moon. That mom sings a lullaby with joy to her child as follows. This song contains totally 24 paragraphs. It is mostly used in north Sri Lanka.

In 1964, Mr.S.Nithyananthan has released a book with the help of Sri Lankan Education Ministry in the name of “Naaddar Paadalgal (நாட்டார் பாடல்கள்)” for the school uses. In that book, there are 7 Tamil lullabies.
